MDM YE: I AM ABLE
“No money, no power, no education, no voice”.
Vulnerable Elderly. Garang Guni.
Story of Aging.
"What can we do when we are old”.
"We are poor people. What can we do when we are old?", exclaimed the lady in her 70s when I offered to pick up the empty can on the ground when I saw her bending her arched back, struggling to reach it. "I'm a garung guni, (pointing to the back alley near the corner where she sat laid stacks of cardboards she has collected). I'm too weak to walk now, no strength, what can I do to contribute to society?"
"No money, no power, no education, no voice. When you are old and poor, there's nothing you can do but to live a day at a time." When I probed further why did she has such negative view in life when she must have a personal story to share. Feeling despondent (with a sigh) she went on to challenge me to ask other old people like her on their views on old age!
Mdm Ye will stay put at the central every day from morning till her son comes back home in the evening to fetch her home together. "So i will just do anything within my means to collect cardboards to supplement income".
